Presented is an antique c1885-1890 sterling matchsafe by an unknown U.S. maker.
It’s a slightly below average size with a sturdy feel.
Its entire exterior (except for the striker on the bottom) has a dense leather-like texture.
It came out around the time realistic textures were popular in American silver--basket weaves, fabrics, etc. (in the matchsafe world, Gorham’s alligator skin design is probably the most well known).
A cool addition to your collection!
